aboratories. This laboratory was founded in 1934 and is recognized as one of the most respected authorities for grading diamonds. The American Gem Society has its own rating scale for a diamond’s cut. This numbering system ranges from 0 to 10.
Abrasion (Abr)
A series of minute nicks along the facet junctions of a diamond that give the edges a white or fuzzy appearance.
Alloy
A mixture of two metals. White metal alloys are added to gold to give white gold its color and sheen.
Asscher Cut
An octagonal step-cut diamond, which is sometimes referred to as a square emerald cut.
Appraisal
An appraisal is a written estimate of the approximate retail replacement value of diamond jewelry, which may be used for insurance purposes.
