Pure gold
has a deep, orangey yellow
color and is 24 “karats”,
which is generally too soft
for most jewelry items. For
this reason, it is alloyed
or melted with other metals
to enhance its durability
and hardness.
Yellow gold is extremely
strong, yet malleable, making
it an excellent foundation
for all types of jewelry.
It is resistant to corrosion,
tarnishing and rust, and will
last through daily wear and
tear. While pure gold scratches
easily, 14k and 18k gold take
on a smooth polish and do
not scratch very easily. In
fact, 14k and 18k yellow gold
are more scratch resistant
than platinum and are more
reflective and lustrous than
24k gold.
Making 14k or 18k yellow
is similar to mixing colors
in paints. By adding metals
such as copper or silver to
yellow gold, the deep orangey
yellow of pure gold begins
to soften to a warm yellow.
The amount of alloy used determines
the karat weight of the gold.
18k gold is used for our
engagement rings because of
the rich, lustrous gold color.
14k gold is used for items
that require more durability
and strength such as our necklace
clasps, chains, hoop earrings
and stud earrings.
The warm color of yellow
gold is an excellent choice
for engagement rings, and
everyday jewelry such as stud
earrings, hoop earrings and
necklaces. With the proper
care, your gold jewelry will
last a lifetime.
